Comments : This is a large and impressive topaz with a five petalled peony flower design. The flower is left frosted on the pavilion so that it stands out. This was cut from a large piece of pale natural blue topaz that an old digger found. It would make quite an impressive pendant, or if you are daring, a ring that would definitely make a statement.

Comments : One of a number of topaz I recently cut for a long time digger on the topaz fields. This is a pale natural blue topaz (what we call "arctic blue") that is cut in my ultra bright Sunflare design. There are some needle inclusions in this gem but in person they are barely noticable. This is a nice bright topaz that is dazzling in the sunlight.

Comments : Cut for private collector from a topaz that he found, this is a stunning gem cut in a bold, brilliant briolette design. Briolettes are not commonly seen because they can be very challenging to cut and to see a large one that has been precision cut is something special. Quite an eye catching and interesting natural blue topaz gemstone!

Comments : A nice big O'Briens Creek natural blue topaz gem cut in my Acorn design. There is a fine silver needle that is visible in some of the pics. In person the needle isn't as pronounced as it is in the picture... the camera always seems to highlight inclusions. This is a fine gemstone.

Comments : Here's something big and impressive... a nice big natural blue topaz cut in a unique "eye" design. This was cut on commission for a collector who found this beauty at O'Briens Creek. This design would make a very interesting pendant or brooch and a jeweller with a creative streak and bit of imagination could do something amazing with stones cut like this. There are designs for both the left and right eye. This particular stone has a good blue colour zone running from tip to tip... "ol' blue eyes".

Comments : This is a truely beautiful natural blue topaz from O'Briens Creek. The colouring of this stone is almost indistinguishable from top unheated Pakistani aquamarine. It has a lovely soft green tint to it which is quite scarce as this material is normally straight blue. This gem will make a fine investment as I believe that natural blue topaz is one of the "sleepers" in today's gem market and is so often overlooked in preference for the bigger "names"... natural blue topaz is yet to have its day in the sun. This gem is a dazzling example of how good blues can look like. The design is very elegant and overall this gem is an exceptional cocktail and evening piece. A superb gemstone.

Comments : These two beautiful natural blue topaz make a fine matched pair. They are cut in an elegant elongated teardrop design that would make fine earrings. The colour is excellent for natural blues and there is alot of action and sparkle. I cut these specifically to go with #305 to make a matched suite of magnificent gemstones. These are unique and very fine gems.

Comments : A truely stunning natural blue topaz! This beauty is cut in a very elegant teardrop that will make a fantastic pendant, ideal for evening wear. The colour of this gem is very saturated for a natural blue topaz and shows wonderful blue tones. Outside in the sunlight the gem exhibits a dazzling dispersion of fireworks in big chromatic flashes... reds, yellows, whites, blues... all the colours of the rainbow. It is very large and clean for its size. There are some very minor silver sparkle inclusions but they are certainly nothing that detract from the overall appearance as they are very hard to see and you really have to look to spot them, otherwise the gem is clean.

I have included some pics of the original rough stone that this gem was cut from. You can clearly see the nice blue colour in this topaz. One of the reasons I chose this particular design was because I knew from past experience that it would actually enhance and darken the colour in the finished gem... I wasn't disappointed. A unique and first class gem!

I have also cut a matching pair of earrings, #306, to go with this pendant stone. These together will make a great suite.

Comments : This is a classic old-style cushion cut which looks lovely in natural blue topaz. This would look ideal as a ring stone.

Comments : Okay folks, this is something special. This is a real collector's gemstone, especially if you are into collecting localities. This gem is a magnificent example of a Mt Surprise / O'Briens Creek topaz. It is eye clean except for a spot the size of a pin-point that is visible using a 10X loupe. It is well cut with lots of action. If you like your gems large, then this is the one for you. It would make a pendant that would stop people in their tracks. There is also a hint of blue in this gemstone.

Comments : I cut this humongous topaz for a fellow that found it this season out at O'Briens Creek. He's a collector of big gems and this is now the biggest topaz he's got. Big stones like this take a long time to cut... there's about 24 hours worth of cutting and polishing to produce that giant gem. It is cut in a brilliant barion style rectangle cushion and is totally awesome! I've included some "action" shots to show you what the original rough stone looked like and in the process of being cut.

Topaz (Light Blue), Barion Old Mine, O'Briens Creek, Mt Surprise, Australia, #45

Stone : Natural Blue Topaz
More Info Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2008
Item : #45
Design : Barion Old Mine (Bob Keller)
Origin : O'Briens' Creek, Mt Surprise, North Queensland, Australia
Treatments : None
Weight : 19.48 carats
Clarity : Very Slightly Included
Size : 15mm X 15mm X 11mm
Price : SOLD

Comments : This is a wonderful natural blue topaz from the O'Briens Creek fields near Mt Surprise. It has a very nice light blue colour that is natural and not caused by artifical heating or irradiation. The design is a variation on the classic "old mine" style. There are several small "horsetail" needle inclusions which are only just visible face up but do not detract from the overall beauty of the stone. They are interesting in their own right. There is a small minor inclusion veil/flaw (about 0.5mm in area) on the surface of the crown near one edge of the girdle. With the right setting this would be hidden. This gemstone is quite large and collectable. A very nice stone!

Weight : 6.3 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean

Comments : Every now and then one comes across a design that has something special about it, some special quality that sets it apart. The Yin-Yang design is one of them. It creates a wonderful "fan-like' effect, beautiful, simple and elegant and perfectly suits natural blue topaz. Part of the effect is created by leaving Yin frosted which contrasts with the polished Yang. A superb gem!

Natural Blue Topaz, Asscher, Brazil, #186

Stone : Natural Blue Topaz
Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2010
Item : #186
Design : Asscher
Origin : Brazil
Treatments : None
Weight : 3.5 carats
Clarity : Very Slightly Included
Size : 8 x 8 x 7 mm
Price : SOLD

Comments : The classic asscher cut looks stunning in natural blue topaz. In my humble opinion, natural blue topaz easily rivals the lighter coloured aquamarine... it has a higher "refractive index" (RI), is harder and often more "blue". This stone has some very fine veil inclusions but they do not detract from the appearance of the gem.

Comments : The history of topaz is a long and ancient one and the gem has long been used as an ornament and jewelry stone. The name "Topaz" is thought to come from the name of an island in the Red Sea formerly called Topazos but now Zebirget. Topaz was mined here on this island. Another possible origin of the name Topaz is that it comes from the Sanskrit word "tapas" which means "fire" or "heat". This could be due to the yellow/red colour that topaz sometimes occurs in.

Many people believe that topaz comes only in yellow and this is true, it does come in yellow. However fancy colors like yellow, reds, oranges and pinks are actually quite rare, so is the very beautiful natural blue. My personal thoughts on why yellow has become closely associate with topaz, in the same way that blue is associated with sapphire, is that in historical times the technology or ability to differentiate between types of stones was very limited. Yellow quartz, now known as Citrine, is quite common in many parts of the world and I believe that alot of yellow topaz was actually yellow quartz. Today we have the ability to tell the difference between the various types of stones but one still has to be cautious in the marketplace and buy from a reputable dealer as there is still the potential for confusion.

Topaz makes an ideal jewelry stone as it is hard and very durable. It cuts well into brilliant designs and becomes a gem that has lots of scintillation and "fire". If I was pushed to pick a personal favorite of all the gemstones, I would probably have to give
natural blue topaz the nod. It is a stone that I love to cut and the colour, though soft, is divine. Truly it is! The soft blue colour is for me, the most elegant of blues, soft and delicate, sometimes ethereal, sometimes icy like the blue in an arctic iceberg. It is cooling on a hot day, fresh and light and always cheery and pleasing. Each stone is unique in its coloring, some have more blue, some less. The colour is easily as beautiful as aquamarine and in truth, far better then the vast majority of aquamarine that is in the marketplace.

Sadly, with the advent of modern gemstone treatment technology, natural blue topaz has taken an undeserved fall from popularity. Irradiation and heating is now routinely used to change the clear silvery white topaz into a uniform array of vivid treated blues. These stones have the trade names of london blue, electric blue, swiss blue and sky blue. The colour is the same for each category and this is the material that you see in jewelry stores across the land. It is cheap and plentiful whereas the natural blues are scarce and relatively expensive. This sudden mass explosion of treated blues dealt the natural blues a blow and that is sad, for these natural blues are easily one of the most beautiful gems in the world of coloured gemstones. Blue sapphires might be the Queen of Gems, but if there is a Princess of Gems, she would be a natural blue topaz.
