This wonderful natural Australian parti sapphire came from an odd shaped piece of rough. Because of the shape I decided to cut it in a freeform style. I quite like cutting a nice freeform as you never know what you're going to get. This sapphire finished up really beautifully and I think I managed a nice balanced symmetry which can be challenging to achieved.

A truly outstanding natural Australian parti colour sapphire cut in a classic oval design. The play of the multiple hues is absolutely wonderful and there also is a beautiful yellow pharaoh's eye in the centre. It is a stone best appreciated in the hand as the pics don't do the gem true justice and the gem loves movement. It is an exceptional sapphire and I highly recommend it. Of all the different types of sapphires created naturally deep within the Earth, perhaps the rarest of them all is the padparadscha. A padparadscha sapphire exhibits a very special blend of pinkish orange hues and is often given the nonclemature of salmon, as in salmon pink or salmon orange, much in the same way as pigeon-blood red is ascribed to certain rubies or cornflower blue to some sapphires.

One of the original locations for padparadscha sapphires was Ceylon and it is thought that the name is derived from the colour of the lotus flower. However these sapphires have been found in many other countries around the world, such as Tanzania, Madagascar and Vietnam. The Ceylon sapphires tend to be very light and delicate in colour and saturation.

Australia produces some of the best sapphires in the world and is well known for the blues, blue-greens, golden yellows and parti colours but the outback gemfields do produce from time-to-time some exceptional fancy colours, such as this padparadscha sapphire. These are rare stones in the extreme and a miner might, if they are lucky, only find one or two of these fancy colours in all the years that they spending digging and working on their claims. Usually they are small stones so to find one this big was a very good day indeed!

Australian sapphires tend to be very vivid and intensely coloured gems and this stone is no exception. We should keep in mind the French term, terrior which is used to describe environmental factors, such as climate and soil and is often used in the wine industry. I can't think of a better word to use and I want to use it to convey the understanding that the conditions deep under the earth where these Australian sapphires are formed is different to that in Ceylon, madagascar and everywhere else in the world. When sapphires (or any gem for that matter) are formed they draw on any number of elements and minerals that are present at the time and this influences the final makeup and appearance of the gem. With the Australian sapphires they are formed in very iron rich ground and this in particular gives these sapphires very deep, vivid and intense saturations and hues.

The hues of this sapphire are deep and rich and the sapphire has a very bright and lively appearance. It has that salmony pink orange hue within it as well as a reddish flash that is very eye catching. There is a colour shift to red under certain lighting conditions, especially at night with candles and flames (ie. fireplace). The natural lighting reveals another dimension to this wonderful sapphire in a similar way it does with the rare alexandrite as it shifts between blue and red, though that is a more distinct colour change.

The full provenance of this sapphire is known. The rough 27.85 carat stone was mined n 2010 by the owner (who is now offering the sapphire for sale) on his claim in Sapphire, Central Queensland. (Yes there is a small town near Rubyvale called Sapphire where sapphires are mined). It was locally precision cut and polished on the gemfields by a master gemcutter, the late Eric Oliver of Rubyvale in a beautiful square radiant style design. This natural sapphire has not been heated. Two valuations have been done for the sapphire along with a gemstone authentication report from the Gem Studies Laboratory here in Sydney and these will accompany the sapphire.

This big natural Australian sapphire was cut by a friend of mine in a variation of the round brilliant design called the Bicentennial Brilliant. This design is great for large sapphires and really adds a dynamic liveliness to the gem. The sapphire has beautiful green blue hues and it looks so much nicer then the pics suggest. For it's size it has a relatively low profile which makes it ideal for a ring stone. It does have some inclusions but they are not really noticable given the size of the stone. Quite an exceptional natural Australian sapphire and very highly recommended.

This natural Australian sapphire has a particular parti colour pattern known as a pharaoh's eye. This refers to when a lighter yellow colour zone is positioned around the centre culet with the blue green colour around it. It is a special stone and is natural and unheated. The sapphire does exhibits some natural growth line inclusions produced by the crystal as it is formed but these do not detract from the overall appearance of the sapphire. Rather it is a good indication that the sapphire is natural and acts sort of like a fingerprint making it totally unique. It is a big stone and will make quite an impressive ring stone. Very highly recommended.
