This is a particularly interesting natural Australian sapphire. This wonderful parti coloured sapphire has a blend of green and yellow and is a very bright gemstone. Towards the centre of the stone you can make out the natural hexagonal growth banding that sapphires something show. This is natural and in some ways is like the growth rings in trees. This sapphire also exhibits a colour change or shift, under certain lighting the yellow takes on a golden bronzey hue and the green a more silvery eucalyptus appearance. It really is quite a beautiful play of colour... that's the thing about these uniquely Australian sapphires, they each have their own particular personality and behaviour. Comments : Here is a beautiful natural Australian sapphire from the renown "Scrub Lead" area near Rubyvale on the Central Queensland gemfields. This lovely sapphire is predominately blue but it does have some small yellow colour zones and so it could be considered a "parti-coloured" sapphire. To the eye the stone appears clean but the camera has picked up some minor "silk" which is the natural crystal growth lines. These are very hard to see with the eye and do not detract from the overall appearance of the gem at all. This is a fabulous Australian sapphire and it has been precision cut and polished on the gemfields. This gem would be perfect for any jewellery setting. A very fine natural sapphire.

This is an outstanding sapphire, the colour is that rich deep cobolt medicine bottle hue and around the circumference there are lighter blue highlights. This stone is a rare gem. Comments : This is an exceptional Australian sapphire that is the perfect size for an amazing ring setting. Now technically this sapphire would be called a parti sapphire as it actually has blue and yellow colour zones however the gem faces up a beautiful blue colour with lighter blue highlights and flashes. The yellow zone is off to the side and isn't really noticable unless you view the sapphire from a certain angle. The yellow is what I think helps with the lighter blue hues in some way. This is a fine stone and for all practical purposes I consider it a blue sapphire. This stone is very similar to #12112-18, it is just a fraction smaller and is a little lighter in saturation as well. Lovely!

Comments : This magnificent gemstone is an Australian black sapphire. It is a big stone, eye clean and untreated, just as it came from the earth. The colour of this stunning sapphire is actually a very deep blue-green, so deep that it becomes what is known as a "black" sapphire. It still retains flashes of the deep rich blue-green colour especially under lights and when viewed in the hand you can see into the stone and note the colours. This sapphire is not opaque like black spinel or black jade, rather it is gemmy and transparent like any other high grade sapphire.

As a side note, when you look at some of pics of the sapphire from the side the colour is strongly green yet when viewed from the front or reverse you get more of the blue coming through. This is illustrating a natural characteristic of sapphires called the "crosstable". Many sapphires have a blue/green crosstable. What this means is that if you were to view a sapphire crystal from the side, ie. across the table, you would see the green colour. Then if you viewed the same sapphire crystal "down" the main axis onto the "top" of the table then you will see the blue colour. It is totally natural. Same sapphires have a blue/blue crosstable, others might have a green/green. Sapphires are often orientated to get the blue colour as the main colour you see when looking at the table of the gem. This has been the case with this particular sapphire gemstone.

Comments : Here's something special and rare. I had this in my rough box for about four years and I thought it was time to give it a polish. It is a 'Lava Plains' cobolt blue sapphire cut in the Bicentennial Brilliant design that was specially created for sapphires. It is 6.8mm, 1.8 carats and eye clean. It is a darkish gem but the colour is an intense and striking cobolt 'medicine bottle' blue that is unique to Sapphire from this location. The flashes of colour coming from this sapphire are vivid and pure. It came from a very remote outback North Queensland location and the actual area where digging is done is small, measured in a handful of acres. It is untreated and unheated, au natural. 'Lava Plains' sapphires are very rare. A very beautiful and unique gem.

Comments : A beautiful natural sapphire from the Central Queensland Gemfields centred around the small outback towns of Rubyvale and Sapphire. Sapphires have been mined from this region for over 100 years. This sapphire is a "parti" colour, ie. a mix of two or more colours, in this case yellow and blue. This gem is superb, perfectly saturated and the colours bold and striking. The customer found this sapphire many years ago whilst fossicking on the gemfields and requested that it be freeform cut following the natural shape of the stone. The result is a beautiful, totally unique gem and is going to be a gift from a mother to her daughter. A very fine sapphire.

Comments : A pair of bright yellow sapphires cut in a Princess Cut style design. Because of their small size, I'd imagine that they would make great accent stones, probably in a ring. One of the stones seems to be eye clean while the other appears to have a veil just under the table. You really have to look to see the veil and the colour and brightness of these gems more then makes up for this inclusion. They were cut from the same piece of rough so they are nicely matched.

Comments : I cut this amazing blue sapphire for a collector who found it himself in the Inverall area of NSW. This area is renown for spectacular sapphires of all colours. When this sapphire was given to me to cut it weighted 33 carats in the rough. The rubbish had already been ground off it so it would have been a whopper to find in your seive while you were digging. It was a very clean stone with just a few tiny, tiny inclusions and had some "sargent stripes". It had not been cooked as the collector prefers his gems in the natural state he finds them.

Using the GemCad program, I designed a new cut specially for this sapphire so as to take advantage of its unique shape and to maximise yield and colour. I ended up going with a step cut kite shape, with five tiers on the pavilion and three on the crown. This beauty took a good three days of cutting. Most of that time was spend on the pre-polish and polish stage... as anyone who has ever cut a large stone knows, those big flat facets can take forever to polish, especially with sapphires. Anyway, at long last the stone was finished and boy, was it a cracker! This is one of a number of large sapphires that I am cutting for the collector and this gem has been earmarked for a beautiful gold pendant. Oh, if only I could find sapphires like this. :-)

Comments : Everyone is familiar with the sapphires that come from Central Queensland but few people know that there is another place in North Queensland where sapphire can be found. It is a small area called "Lava Plains" and the sapphire found here has the most beautiful cobolt "medicine bottle" blue colour... it is a most beautiful blue. The digging is very hard here and dry. All water has to be brought in order to wash the dirt to find the sapphire. It is only a very small deposit and finding a good clean stone takes alot of hard work and time. A true collector's gemstone.
