Golden yellow citrine is one of my favorite stones, I just love the intense rich golden hues that burst out of the gem. I cut this one specifically with the traditional Japanese chrysanthemum symbol in mind. This gem ties directly to that. A beautiful gem for a special setting.

A bright and beautiful citrine that I have made with a mix of faceted surfaces and deep carved crevasses on the pavilion. Flip the gem over onto it's table and these look like a mountain range with tall peaks and deep valleys. This sort of design is very much in the munsteiner style and is a fascinating way to work with gems as it creates a totally unique gem with an amazing inner landscape. These gems can be set as rings or pendants. Polishing these deeply carved surfaces is very technically challenging and time consuming.

First gem of the year for 2020... 162.9 carat citrine carving! Did this one last week when I was at "work" but not really at work, if you know what I mean. I'm really enjoying the carving of hard stone but I'm realising how much more commitment and time it takes to achieve a highly polished result.

To give you some idea, let's say that with a regular faceted gem I might take 3 to 6 hours to finish it from rough to polished during which I'll usually go through four stages : 260 rough cut > 600 fine cut > 3k prepolish and finally 100k polish. With carving a decent sized stone like this one I could take something like 15 to 20 hours or more and I'll have to progress through 13 or 14 stages! It begins with roughing the shape in, removing all the rubbish and flaws and generally defining the shape the carving will take. This is done with diamond sintered and plated burs in a lathe usually with grits 70 > 170 > 325 to 600.

Then I move onto the fine shaping using hand sanding boards and wet/dry sandpaper. This is a slow and laborious hand cramping process but essential for getting the beautiful smooth flowing curves. Here I go with 180 > 280 > 400 > 600 grits. Once there are absolutely no marks and scratches on the surface I can finally move onto the messy polishing stage. This involves using various grit pastes that I have made up and wooden burs in various shapes. I begin with the 600 grit paste and progress through 1200 > 3K > 8K > 14K and finally cerium oxide with felt burs.

There are alot of steps to work through and I've found that you simply can't skip any because of the importance of removing the marks and scratches from each of the preceding grits. As you move forward the marks and grits get finer and finer until you achieve a highly polished finish. Discipline and consistency!

I've been experiementing with some new techniques and I'm really excited by what I'm seeing, it's a lot of fun learning new skills and just playing with stone with no expectations. Really happy with how this citrine turned out. It is a beautiful eye clean golden citrine and I cut some optical "bubbles" to see what would happen. The pics are a little more orange then the citrine is in real life... my cameras have real trouble capturing the yellow spectrum, yellow and pinks are very tricky. In the hand the gem is a fine vivid golden colour with some typcial zoning. Expect to see more of this sort of cutting.

Comments : A totally unique piece. This is a very striking golden citrine cut in a design that I specifically intended for a pendant. It is a low profile so it will sit well against the chest. There is a "frosted" pentagram on the reverse side that was very tricky to photograph but it is there. A golden colour zone runs through the centre of the gem from side to side... it looks like a golden cloud. This is something a little bit different and would look absolutely fabulous set in yellow metal.

Comments : Presenting a stunning 185 facet flame orange ctrine masterpiece. This beauty is cut in one of Jeff Graham's 'dome' designs called "Kalli". This incredible design has 185 facets which makes for a stone that is time consuming to cut but so well worth it when done. The crown dome really enhances the colours of the gem, intensifies them, and creates a sense of depth inside the gemstone, a real 3D space. The reflections, patterns and sparkles are truly wonderful and they fill the gem with so much life. This design was made to be bezel set.

The colours are rich and intense, a real flame orange gold. In all lighting conditions the gem is just one big beautiful ball of golden light, even with the arm outstretched there is no missing this baby. The crown dome catches all the surrounding light which makes this one a great evening stone... it really does glow. Its one of those rare gems that will totally captivate and mesmerize you when you see it.

I have also shown some 'action' shots that I took as I was cutting this gem. These might give you an insight into how such a gemstone is cut. The first stage is the pavilion. This is cut and polished and then placed in a 'transfer' block. The first part is held with a type of wax, the second half is held with a two part epoxy.

Next we cut and polish the crown. With this design, this is the time consuming part. There are alot of facets there to cut and polish and each facet is touched 5 times... 280 grit, 600, 1200, 3000 and then finally the polish. So with 185 facets, I'm really cutting 925 facets by the time I work through from the course grits to the polish!

Comments : A wonderful, golden citrine cut in an oval design with good body. It has a beautiful flashiness about it and it very alive and sparkly. The colours are a lovely golden yellow, not the lemon yellow or often overly saturated whiskey colour. It is a perfect size for a ring and would really show up well. The gemstone is eye clean with no visible flaws or inclusions. There is some colour zoning but the colours mix nicely and are not overly saturated when viewing the stone from the face up. The finish on this stone is superb and the polish is mirror like. A very pleasing gem.

Comments : This is one for the collectors. The design is based on the "All Seeing Eye" which is usually portrayed as an eye inside a triangle, often shown with radiating beams of light. I had a tough time trying to capture the eye effect but just couldn't seem to get it right. In one of the photos you can make out a darkish eye shape... the dark is due to reflection of the camera lens. In person it is fantastic with bright flashing rays of light around the eye. The design itself is quite a challenging one to cut and requires alot of patience and precision to get the eye and iris just right. A very different and unique gem.

Comments : A nice lightly coloured asscher cut citrine. This particular combination of colour, stone and cut is fast becoming a classic. Before I cut it I thought that the madeira colour might be too dark for an Asscher but when I was finished I was pleasantly surprised that that was the case. Comments : This is a pretty groovey gemstone. The design is one of Fred Van Sant's original designs and is rarely seen cut. Comments : This stone was found by a wonderful couple who came on a topaz digging tour with me. They had a bonanza of a day and found some great stone. They asked me to cut this gem for them as I mentioned that I like to cut big stones and this one certainly was that. Besides the topaz for which O'Briens Creek is famous, some excellent citrine, smokey and aquamarine is also found. This citrine was unearthed as a large water worn pebble. The couple have since informed me that they've had it professionally set by a master jeweller as a pendant and it looks absolutely fabulous!
