Comments :
The fancy coloured garnets are without doubt one of my most favorite of gems. The fancy colours are the oranges, yellows and greens... they are always exceptionally bright, really really bright! They have great fire and are always high performers. I love the colours, stunning and full of life... they are happy uplifting gems and are always a pleasure to see.
What I have here is a very rare matched suite of beautiful Mali garnets. There are three orange/yellow Mini-Mints, three light minty green Mini-Mints and two Brilliant Pears. They are all finely matched in terms of colour and saturation. I would like to keep them as a suite as they would make a really special jewellery item, something that would be totally dazzling.
All the gems are over 1 carat... the Mini-Mints are in the 1.1 to 1.2 carat range and the Brilliant Pears are 1.35 carats each. They are very clean stones with just a few specks and small inclusions that are common to garnets of this type... the inclusions do not detract from the overall appearance of the gems at all. A very fine matched suite of Mali garnets... a rare find!

A beautiful rhodolite garnet cut in the favorite Rose Cut design. This gem has a flat bottom which makes it idea for a pendant or a ring giving the setting a relatively low profile. I think this lovely rhodolite would be ideally set on a yellow gold base under the pavilion. This would make for a dynamite effect and really make the stone sing.

Here is a magnificent garnet with strong vivid crimson red hues. It is deep and mysterious and powerful, a strong stone with a fiery soul, it embodies passion and strength. This is the first stone I've cut in my new design, "Bravery", I think the two go together perfectly. The design is shaped like a shield and also a heart, which in part inspired the name.

When I think of blood red garnets, this is the type of stone I've got in mind. It is a superb natural garnet from Malawi and has a deep rich blood red colour. This is a really nice stone with that classic archetypal red hue that we all think of when we imagine a straight up red garnet. The cut is one of my favorite oval designs, the Supernova, and the size if ideal for a dynamite ring setting. This garnet is highly recommended.
This garnet is the same colour as #884 , a similar Malawi red garnet Supernova I cut previously.

Comments :
Cutting a gemstone freehand using no designs is at the same time both liberating and very very challenging. It requires a solid grounding in the basics of gemcutting and intimate knowledge of one's faceting machine and techniques. This is a beautiful mahenge garnet from Tanzania and I decided to just play with the stone for a change rather then following a normal design. The rough stone was relatively shallow for it's length and width so to cut a normal shaped gem would result in too much loss. So instead I decided to try something a little different and not cut a pointy culet but rather have a flat bottom just like the table on the top. It was a very very interesting experiment and I learnt quite a bit from it. It felt like sketching a landscape and interpreting it in the moment, but instead I was 'sketching' the stone and interpreting it purely in the moment. There is no going back and rubbing out mistakes for once you grind off some material there ain't any putting it back. I think I'm going to do some more in this 'freehand' style... I really enjoyed it. Carefully laying down each facet, trusting my instincts and just playing! This gem would suit any type of jewellery with it's slightly lower profile.

Ok folks, what we have here is a very unique and quite special offering. This is a matched suite of stunning RED malaia garnets from Tanzania! Large garnets of this exceptional caliber are scarce and these ones represent the cream of the crop. I have had a good look around and I have not seen anything else that even comes close to this matched suite of malaia garnets. The colour is RED, not raspberry, nor purple or anything else... just a rich, sultry red. The colour is very satisfying and it almost goes without saying that if you're that lady in red, these are the gems for you.
The gems are all eye clean and have been superbly cut and polished in the classic Asscher design. These gems warrant the best of settings and my goodness, what amazing jewels they'll make. The smaller pair of garnets are perfectly matched in colour as they come from the same piece of rough and are what I call "sibling" stones. That's something that sets them apart right there. You can see the original piece of rough here .
The single large garnet is an awesome gem... it is a big stone! It is just a touch darker then the pair but has the same red colour. The original piece of rough is here .
These gems are being sold as a suite, I really do not want to separate them. I think it would be a shame to split them up as getting three magnificent, matched garnets like these together, well, it's not something that you come across every day. Its a bit like the stars aligning... sure, it happens but only once in a blue moon.
20/1/14 - Added a 7mm matched pair to make a suite of five gems.

Not often that I've seen such nice garnet especially given that it was found very close by. A small patch of garnets was found a while ago when a powerline was being put over some hills - the crew bulldozing a track uncovered it. Those garnets were snapped up pretty quickly. Anyway, one fellow who was lucky enough to find some wanted a nice suite of stones cut as gifts for his granddaughters. I think they will be very happy with these nice garnet gems.

Comments : Rhodolite garnet of this calibre represent the top end of rhodolites. This beautiful rhodolite is a stellar example of just how good this material can look. It has all the classic colour tones, like deep burgandy and plum. The cut is a very modern oval design and has a low crown profile. I think this gem will make a great men's ring... the colour, size, design and profile are perfect. There is some of the very fine silk and sparkle inclusions that is common to rhodolite but it is hard to spot and does not detract from the overall appearance of this gem. This is a really fine gemstone!

Comments : A nice big oval fanta orange mandarin spessartite garnet. This is an incredible gem and illustrates why this particular type of mandarin garnet is so much in demand. The colours are rich and vibrant and the design is a combination of a barion pavilion with a step crown. This combination adds flash and brilliance and enhances the colour. This gemstone is very bright with great flash and fire. Using a loupe I could spot a couple of very small minor veils near the girdle but they certainly do not detract from the appearance of the gem at all. A fabulous unique mandarin garnet gemstone.

Comments : A very nice Umbalite garnet from Tanzania that is cut in a calibrated sized oval that should easily fit any standard setting without any difficulty. It has the classic Umbalite colours and there are several needle like inclusions and a tiny white spot. Face-up, these inclusions are difficult to spot and do not detract from the overall appearance of the gemstone. The oval design is a nice and bright, flashy performer. This is an ideal stone for a ring setting.

Here is something unusual and different. This is a spessartite garnet that has a really good translucent appearance... think cloudy ginger beer crossed with Mexican opal and you will be in the ballpark. Now, this gem is not brilliant nor has flashes of fire, rather it has a luminous inner glow and the colour... WOW! I wasn't sure how it would turn out prior to cutting it, but after seeing how it did turn out I am very impressed and quite taken by it. It is different and because of it, quite unique.

Comments : Garnets are quite a fascinating group of minerals once you get into them. Chemically they are complex and confusing and often very hard to clearly identify what a particular stone is... is it a pyrope, or rhodolite, or almandine? Garnets are found just about everywhere in the world and have a long and ancient history. They have long been popular as jewelry and the cystals much sort after by mineral specimen collectors.
Some of the more familiar types of garnets are :
Pyrope : Red to Brown, RI 1.720 - 1.756, Density 3.62 - 3.87, Mg3Al2(SiO4)3 Magnesium Aluminium Silicate. Name comes from the Greek word "fiery" and has always been a popular fashion stone, once called the "Bohemian Garnet".
Rhodolite : Red to Brown, RI 1.720 - 1.756, Density 3.62 - 3.87, Fe3Al2(SiO4)3 Iron Aluminium Silicate. Rhodolite is a variety of Pyrope and has gained much popularity of late. Some of the nicest rhodolite comes from the Umba Valley in Tanzania and is called Umbalite.
Spessartite : Orange to Red-Brown, Fanta Orange, RI 1.79 - 1.82, Density 4.12 - 4.18, Mn3Al2(SiO4)3 Manganese Aluminium Silicate. It is believed that the name comes from the Spessart in Germany where it is found. Some amazing spessartite comes in a very bright fanta orange colour. Deposits of this material are very small and found in Namibia and Loliondo, Tanzania. This material also goes by the name Mandarin Garnet because of the colour, as well as being called Kunene Spessartine due to the primary source being in the alluvial deposits of the Kunene River between Namibia and Angola. You can see how confusing it can be with all these different names. This fanta orange spessartite garnet is very popular and for good reason... the colour is stunning with fabulous brightness and sparkles, plus this material is getting very rare as the deposits become mined out. Grab this material when you can because it won't be around forever.
Grossular : Green, Yellow, Brown, RI 1.734 - 1.759, Density 3.57 - 3.73, Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 Calcium Aluminium Silicate. Latin for gooseberry, grossular garnet cuts a very bright light gem. Apparently it has only been known since 1966 in gemstone quality. Varieties of grossular are : Hessonite - a cinnamon brown red orange stone; Hydrogrossular - is an opaque massive green variety, sometimes called Transvaal Jade and Garnet Jade; Leuco - is a colourless variety.
Tsavorite : Deep Green. Is a variety of grossular and perhaps one of the rarest and most expensive of all the garnets. This particular variety is a stunning rich green and tends to be only found in very small stones. Cut gems over 2 or 3 carats are considered scarce and are collector stones. The name Tsavorite was coined only recently in 1974 by Tiffany & Company after Tsavorite's discovery in the Tsavo National Park, Kenya. Tsavorite garnets are much sort after and compete easily with emeralds - plus they have the great advantage of not being treated (oiled) as virtually all emeralds are. Tsavorite gems have a higher brilliance, fire with lots of sparkles and are more durable. Emeralds are almost always heavily included whereas Tsavorite gems tend to be very clean.
Merelani Mint : Mint Green. This beautiful garnet is a variety of grossular and is closely related to Tsavorite. It is named for the Merelani Hills in Tanzania where it is found. This material is a lovely light mint coloured stone and like Tsvaorite is generally only found in small sizes. It has become very popular and demands a high price due to its scarcity. You can see an example of facet rough merelani mint garnet here .
