O'Briens Creek Campground
The O'Briens Creek campground is one of those magical places that very few people seem to know about. It has long been known in the lapidary and gem fossicking circles as THE place to go if you want to look for topaz.
It is located 40km outside of Mt Surprise (North Queensland) along a good dirt road suitable for caravans and other vehicles, however as aways, being a dirt road please drive to prevailing conditions and watch out for cattle!
The camping area is fantastic, real bush camping at its best. There is a large area with good tree shade, you can have a campfire and dogs are allowed (as long as they don't run wild!). The campground is situated on the banks of a freshwater creek that flows year round and on the other side of the creek is the fossicking area where there is topaz to be found. There is also a full amenities block with his and hers toilets and showers (hot water!). There is no electricity so bring your own generator.
Please note that the campground is usually closed from Christmas to March over the "wet" season. The best time to dig here are the winter months - June, July and August. After that it starts getting a bit hot. Contact phone numbers are on the flyer.
Below there is a PDF flyer that you can click on and download or alternatively click on the pictures below for a bigger one that you can read.
Hope to see you at O'Briens Creek one day! :-)
