This superb loose natural tourmaline gemstone from Afghanistan is an embodiment of one of my favorite colours. This is an exceptional matched pair of pink tourmaline Supernova ovals that a client commissioned me to recut for them from a pair of commercial cut gems. The originals were not very exciting and had some windowing that needed to be removed. The pavilion on the commercial cuts was quite bulbous which does no favours to the appearance of a gem. Most people don't realise that this sort of bulbous pavilion is actually a negative aspect in a gemstone and detracts from the ideal proportions and appearance. It is done by commercial cutting factories purely because it is quick and retains weight.

I decided to recut them in one of my favorite oval designs in order to close the window and put more life and brilliance into the stone as well as making them as matched as possible. The result is a much finer, better looking pair of tourmaline gemstones.

I've included some before shots of the original commercial cut gems so that you can clearly see how they looked prior to recutting.

Comments : This is an outstanding pink tourmaline from Afghanistan. This is among my most favorite of stones to work with. There is something about the Afghani tourmalines which makes them the among the finest in the world. This beauty is truly superb, the colour is what I would call "candy" pink and is intense! The gem was orientated and cut down the "C" axis which is the way to get the best colour out of a stone. You can see the original tourmaline crystal here. The design I chose is one of my classic designs, the Antique Round with a slight variation on the crown. I decided to do what's called "split mains" which gives some extra facets and sparkles to the gem, this is why I've added the "Royale" suffix to the design name.

Overall, this is a first-class pink tourmaline gemstone and one that I know you will absolutely fall in love with. A very highly recommended gemstone and definitely one for those that love PINK!

Comments : Congratulations to Alistair Kelsey on his win in the 2017 Jewellers Association of Australia annual awards where he took out the 2017 Australian Jeweller of the Year award. Alistair created a stunning multicoloured masterpiece which featured a beautiful 13.66 carat Nigerian pink tourmaline as the centre stone. I was lucky enough to be able to cut this beautiful tourmaline for Alistair.

This gem started as a very fine tourmaline crystal weighing 29.3 carat. It was ideally shaped for a nice long emerald baguette style design. The design featured nice long facets that accentuate the wonderful colour and really added a sense of simple elegance to the finished gem. I have included some pics of the original crystal and while it was being cut.

Comments : This is truly a one-of-a-kind gemstone. This is a beautiful piece of rubellite tourmaline, eye clean with deep rich colours. The design was inspired by the round design called 'Kalli' by Jeff Graham. I created it specifically for this tourmaline. It is a very challenging design to facet but the results are worth it. In the sunlight the colour shows a very bright hot pink with lots of fire and action and there are many hues in this stone right through to rubellite. There are purples, violets, pinks and reds. It is truly unique and a connoisseur's stone.

When I first took it off the dopstick and out into the sun it took my breath away. The pics just can't capture how stunning this gem is. It just lit up like a pink ball of fire... as if the sun came down and decided to throw a party inside. The colour is like a hot deep candy pink when the sun lit it up.

If you did want to set it in a piece of jewellery then it would suit a bezel setting of some kind. It has a high dome, much like a high domed cabochon except with lots and lots of facets... 201 facets to be precise. A true masterpiece and a fine example of the gemcutter's art.

Colourwise I would class it as a rubellite and referring to the trusty Old Holland oil masters colour chart I'd say there are hints of cobolt violet light and scheveningen violet with deep salmon pink highlights... the pics really don't do justice to this gem. Comments : Here are two of the finest Afghan tourmalines of this type that you could hope to find. They are exceptional gems in every regard and they are very well matched which makes them even rarer. I have cut them in the modern classic Smith Bar design. This design is one of my favorites and works so well in tourmaline. One of them has a noticeable blue zone near one end and the other has a touch of blue but its not as noticeable. They are very close to eye clean with just a few small minor inclusions near the ends. They would make a very special pair of earrings or perhaps a pair of cufflinks. Comments : Here is a lovely parcel of tourmalines, garnets and an incredible royal blue sapphire that I recently cut for a client. There were a couple of stunning merelani mint green garnets (geez I love those mints!!!) which were simply dazzling, and the tourmalines are all wonderful. The sapphire was one of the finest little blues I've cut... it was a stunning royal blue, perfect saturation, nice and rich. Overall a superb parcel of gems cut from rough supplied by the client.

Comments : This is an amazing hot pink tourmaline cut in a design I created especially for this piece called "Mock Check Double Charm". The customer wanted a gem specially for a charm bracelet. We selected a thinner piece of rough and the design creates a very interesting checkerboard effect that is very pleasing. The design would suit gems that will be set as charms or pendants. This beautiful gem is 9.8x9.8x4.8mm and is 4.5 carats. Absolutely stunning!

Comments : Here's that hot pink tourmaline from Nigeria I was cutting earlier in the week... a truly stunning stone custom cut for a customer, I think they will be quite happy. It is a top pink colour with gorgeous violet highlight flashes... devine! It came in at 7.8x7.8x5mm,1.6ct and is cut in the classic "Round Brilliant" design. It is magnificent in all lighting conditions. A top shelf gem... absolutely delicious!

Comments : 2.4 ct sunset tourmaline cut in a "lazy pear" design. This type of tourmaline shows two distinct colours depending on the axis you view it from, in one direction it shows a green and the other a golden sunset colour hence the name. It's a very aussie stone I think as our "national" colours are the green and gold.
